Queer Kino Coming Up


Queer Screen is pleased to see that the Goethe Institut has continued their tradition of including quality queer cinema in their annual Festival of German Films. Here's your quick guide to the LGBT and queer themed picks of the festival, screening in Sydney from April 21st - May 2nd

AIMÉE & JAGUAR 
This 1999 Oscar nominated film, based on a true events, tells the story of forbidden love between a Jewish woman and a German woman in 1940s Berlin.  Author Erica Fischer  will be in attendance and in conversation with Queer Screen's Lex Lindsay.

BERLIN ‘36 
The highly charged encounter between two athletes preparing for the Berlin Olympics: Politics, race and gender mix with sport in this true-to-history drama.

FAITH (Shahada) 
Three young Muslim’s faith is tested and their lives changed as they move though Berlin and struggle with friendships, guilt and identities in this compelling Berlinale Competition drama.

MAYBE, MAYBE NOT (Der bewegte Mann)
 
The big hit of Queer Screen's German retrospective in 2007.  On his search for a new home a handsome, macho straight man ends up in a gay household only to question his lifestyle – and that of many around him.

POPE JOAN (Die Päpstin) 
Germany in the 9th Century: A highly talented young woman overcomes the rules of the patriarchal world, but has to disguise herself as a man to follow the path of learning, which ultimately leads her to the Vatican.

SAME SAME BUT DIFFERENT
 
The amorous encounter between a young German and a Cambodian girl leads to life changes: He discovers that she is not what she first seemed – and begins to question his own desires and identity.
