Amidst the political and social tumult of Brazil in the 70s, another revolution was going on. A grease paint revolution. This diaphanous doco tells the tale of Dzi Croquettes, a Brazilian Burlesque troupe whose dogmatic nonconformity and dazzling cabaret performances flew in the face of the military dictatorship's violence and censorship.
Far from female impersonators, these astounding stage performers embodied masculine ambiguity in ways that had never been seen before, and their cheeky sexually charged antics earned the adoration of both men and women, gay and straight, including none other than Liza Minelli, who here recalls how she found them, loved them, and dragged them to Paris.
From France and beyond their notoriety periodically boomed, before these original radical fairies came undone, due, of course, to the usual suspects - drugs, debauchery, bickering and murder. This vibrant tribute is both a celebration of their accomplishments and a confession of the equally remarkable stories that were taking place behind the scenes of this sequin bathed revolution.
