We know him for being bravely openly gay in the commercial pop world, we know him for his extraordinary voice and eye-catching fashion sense, we know him as the descendant of music industry legends, but did we know he also composes operas? Turns out the opera world didn't know it either.
Prima Donna is Rufus Wainwright's debut opera, the story of a great Diva who has lost her voice from a broken heart. The film takes us through the development process, the creative conflicts and Rufus's struggle to be taken seriously in the structured hierarchy of the classical music world. Interspersed throughout the unfolding melodrama, we meet the Wainwright family and are introduced to a collection of home videos revealing Rufus as an engaging ham from an early age, directing and upstaging a cast of cousins in home productions of musical favourites, flashing forward to his more recent recreations of July Garland hits and live concert performances. These glimpses of Rufus The Star stand in stark contrast to the embattled composer in the rehearsal room, where collaborators seem to question both his cause and capacity to get the job done.
